Legendary musicians, singers and songwriters flocked to Greenwich Village in the sixties and seventies when musicians began to speak to a new audience and generation of folk, country, and rock. As a teenager in the City Ray was hooked on spending time in clubs like the Gerdes Folk City, The Bitter End, The Village Gaslight, Max’s Kansas City as well as Washington Square and dozens of coffee houses.
Finding his voice and with his beloved Martin D35 guitar, his music evolved singing the inspiring songs of Dylan, Arlo Guthrie, John Prine, Steve Goodman, and many others. Ray was fortunate to further his guitar study with acoustic guitar blues legend Ian Buchannan, a disciple of Reverend Gary Davis. Ian also taught accomplished musicians such as Jorma Kaukonen of Jefferson Airplane/Hot Tuna, and John Hammond Jr. Ray became proficient with his own fingerpicking and songwriting style, and by the early seventies he began performing over 100 shows a year throughout the New York City area. Ray became part of the scene, and it was an exciting time to be sharing the New York City music calendar with established and upcoming artists.
Ray's music was once described by Martin Kaufman of the Buffalo Record as “Ray’s originally composed and arranged tunes displayed his unparalleled prowess on guitar and harmonica, and his poetic musical talent”. Throughout the past 50 years Ray has played at many venues from the famous Gerdes Folk City and Pips in New York City to venues in Buffalo, Florida, Alta Utah, and Santa Fe.
Ray’s music and family have now found a new home in a region with deep roots in country, blues, folk and southern rock. Throughout venues in the area, Ray will be performing his own songs and many of the folk and blues classics such as The Weight, Will’in and Fire and Rain. In addition; Ray’s album Long Time Coming with all original songs was just released this Summer 2023.
